What is Dermal Filler?

Dermal fillers, often known as "soft tissue fillers," include hyaluronic acid injections (HA). HA is a naturally occurring molecule that helps moisturize and fill facial wrinkles and depressions. Injecting dermal filler, such as Revanesse, Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse and others, instantly adds volume to the area.

It diminishes the presence of wrinkles and fine lines, bringing back the face's youth. The fillers usually contain stabilizing molecules like BDDE (1,4-Butanediol Diglycidyl Ether), hyaluronic acid, water, and Lidocaine anesthetic.

What do I need to avoid after treatment?

To reduce the risk of bruising and swelling, our provider recommends that you refrain from strenuous physical activity for 48 hours after your treatment. You should also avoid heat-inducing activities like saunas, hot showers, and spas. It can take anything from 48 hours to two weeks for a patient's recovery to be complete. Depending on your unique circumstances, our medical professionals can assist you in understanding what to expect.

Dermal Fillers Post-Treatment Instructions

Immediately after treatment the most commonly reported side-effects include: temporary redness, bruising, swelling, and/or lumps at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within 7-28 days. Cold compresses and arnica may be used immediately after treatment to reduce these effects.

A follow up appointment can be scheduled 2-3 weeks after the initial appointment because the swelling needs to be completely resolved before the provider can reassess the area and inject if the patient wants more filler.

To minimize bruising and swelling avoid blood thinning medications and supplements including but not limited to: Aspirin, Anti- inflammatory drugs (ex. Advil, Tylenol), Gingko balboa, Garlic, Flaxseed Oil, Vitamin E, Alcohol, spicy food, salty foods, and cigarettes 48 hrs after your treatment.
If you were instructed to take Arnica, take it as directed. You may continue to take it for up to 7 days post treatment.
Drink 4 additional glasses of water for the next 3 days. You can eat, drink, and gently apply sunblock/makeup shortly after treatment.
Avoid manipulation or massaging of area for at least 6 hours after treatment which can cause irritation, sores, and possible scarring. The area can be gently cleansed with your daily face wash. Avoid sleeping on side of treated area for 3 days.
It is normal to feel “firmness” in the injection site first day after treatment. In some cases, a lumpy formation can be felt on the injected area(s). This is a normal reaction to the filler, and over time the area will soften leaving you with natural looking results. Lumps may be GENTLY massaged 48 hours after treatment
Until the initial redness and swelling has resolved, avoid strenuous exercises, prone (face down) body massage or exposure of the treated area to intense heat (sunlamp or sunbathing).
If you have previously suffered from cold sores, there is a risk treatment could trigger another episode. Call us immediately if you start experiencing these symptoms or develop any persistent side effects at 407-449-1885
